What significance does mud flaps have?

Just broken down coz had no oil in my car so filled it up (I know what it does to ur engine etc) then continued driving home, then heard a loud bang like I'd hit something or a puncture but knew it weren't none of them, then realised my mud flaps missing. Do I need a new one or not coz I don't want that damaging my car like my oil! Thanks
